Hear from world-renowned graphic designer Seymour Chwast and guest curator Leonard S. Marcus as they discuss how the eye-popping color, bold lettering, and buoyant wit of Chwast’s commercial work informs his out-of-the-box children’s books. This program is in conjunction with the exhibition Kid in a Candy Store: The Picture Book Art of Seymour Chwast.

Who You'll Meet

Seymour Chwast

Renowned for a lifetime of innovative graphic design work, Seymour Chwast is a founding partner of Push Pin Studios, known for its iconic posters, editorial illustrations, book and magazine covers, and packaging design. Chwast’s work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Smithsonian’s Cooper Hewitt Design Museum. He has been exhibited internationally in Japan and Brazil and had a retrospective at the Louvre’s Musée des Arts Décoratifs in France. Photograph by Camille Murphy.

Leonard S. Marcus

Leonard S. Marcus is a historian, writer, critic, and curator. His many books include Margaret Wise Brown: Awakened by the Moon; Dear Genius: The Letters of Ursula Nordstrom; Golden Legacy; Show Me a Story!; and most recently Pictured Worlds and Earthrise. He is a founding trustee of the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art.
