Artists Julie Flett (We All Play) and Nooshin Safakhoo (In the Meadow of Fantasies) come together to share their work and process, and what inspires them to create. Joining them is Sara Khalili, who will discuss the art of translating In the Meadow of Fantasies from Persian to English.

Their books are a part of The Carle’s Reading Library book exhibition, Read the World: Picture Books and Translation. Note: This program will not be recorded.

Julie Flett

Julie Flett is a Cree–Métis author, illustrator, and artist who has received numerous awards for her books, including two Governor General’s Awards, the American Indian Library Association Award, and the TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award. Her books have been selected for Best of the Year lists by media outlets including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Publisher’s Weekly, The Horn Book, The Boston Globe, School Library Journal, The Globe and Mail, and Kirkus Reviews.

Illustrator Nooshin Safakhoo

Nooshin Safakhoo

Iranian illustrator Nooshin Safakhoo was born in Tehran in 1980. After teaching, she began a long career of painting precise, lyrical images for children’s books, including The Owl & the Jaybird and Shahname. In the Meadow of Fantasies has earned her numerous awards, including a NAMI Concours Prize and a 2022 Mildred L. Batchelder Honor. Nooshin has been selected three times to show her work at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair.

Translator Sara Khalili

Sara Khalili

Sara Khalili is an editor and translator of contemporary Iranian literature. Her translations include Moon Brow and Censoring an Iranian Love Story by Shahriar Mandanipour, The Pomegranate Lady and Her Sons by Goli Taraghi, The Book of Fate by Parinoush Saniee, Kissing the Sword by Shahrnush Parsipur, and Rituals of Restlessness by Yaghoub Yadali.
