Volunteer Programs

Volunteers at The Carle are interested in sharing their love of museums, art-making, and children’s books with guests of all ages. Volunteers enjoy benefits, such as discounts in The Carle Bookshop, appreciation events during the year, and opportunities to attend professional development workshops.

For the best experience, we ask that volunteers commit to one shift per week for at least three months during The Museum’s regular open hours. At this time, volunteer positions are open to applicants 18 years or older.

Please note: There are no Reading Library volunteer positions open at this time.

Art Studio

Volunteers welcome guests of all ages to the Art Studio, prepare art materials, and help maintain a clean, safe space. The Carle’s art educators work closely with the volunteers as a team to support the values of the studio: to provide an accessible space, to celebrate materials through open-ended exploration, to promote collaboration, and to pursue an environmentally sustainable practice. The Carle values the skills and experience that each volunteer brings with them, and the staff tried to match these to the tasks needed.

Reading Library

Reading Library volunteers encourage reading and exploring our picture-book collection. We seek volunteers who find joy in reading with others and are interested in leading active, participatory storytimes. Generally, the Reading Library is a quiet place where guests can relax and read during their visits. Storytimes and special events can get busy. We look for self-directed volunteers who can work productively in both settings.
