As the story of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland marks its 150th anniversary, we look back to examine how far Alice has come. Since her creation by Lewis Carroll, Alice’s character and the nature of Wonderland have been re-imagined by a multitude of illustrators, and – true to the story – Alice has grown to adapt to a changing world. This exhibition surveys the real-world origins of Alice, her evolving modern identity, Wonderland as an extension of Alice’s self, and international representations of her story. Now, as the King in Alice’s tale instructs, let us “begin at the beginning.” This fantastical story began 150 years ago with two very real people: a little girl and a mathematician.
