Barbara McClintock: The Heartaches of a French Cat

May 17 - November 26, 2011
Central Gallery
Inspired by stories of the 19th-century French authors Honoré de Balzac and P. J. Stahl, Barbara McClintock tells the story entirely in pantomime of an upwardly mobile cat who is wooed and betrayed by a Count of no account. Her anthropomorphic drawings were informed by the highly popular 19th-century French caricaturist J. J. Granville. The book is a wonderful blend of black-and-white and color illustrations. In addition to the published works, the exhibition includes a selection of book dummies, character studies, preliminary sketches, and color trials.
