Leo Lionni: Geraldine, the Music Mouse

The Carle honors the centenary of Leo Lionni’s birth with Geraldine, the Music Mouse (1979), borrowed from the Lionni family. Best known for his collage technique and gentle social commentary, Lionni created his children’s books inspired by his grandchildren, Annie and Pippo. Lionni helped Eric Carle land his first job when he returned to America in 1952. Their work shares elegant design and big stories told through humble animals.

Leo Lionni

Leo Lionni lived in New York City and Italy. An art director and artist, he brought an elegant sense of design and draftsmanship to picture books—a path he began to pursue at age 49 with the publication of Little Blue and Little Yellow. Lionni served as a mentor for many picture book artists, including Eric Carle.
