Since the original publication of Free to Be… You and Me fifty years ago, picture books have adopted diverse approaches to help children understand gender. Join Amherst College student Mone Kawano for a storytime and book exploration featuring recent titles that represent gender in a variety of ways. After the book share, children can participate in a collaborative drawing activity responding to highlighted books. Recommended for families with children ages 4-10.

Mone Kawano

Mone Kawano is a senior at Amherst College majoring in Art History. Her academic focus includes museum studies and children’s literature. She is currently working on a course project exploring social justice through contemporary children’s literature.
