Inside-Outside Dinosaurs: Creating a Book with Roxie Munro
What to Expect
This exhibition displays Roxie Munro’s original and preliminary art for her book Inside-Outside Dinosaurs. Copies of Munro’s book, and many other popular dinosaur picture books, are available for guests to read in the gallery. Also on display are fossilized dinosaur footprints, discovered in the Pioneer Valley, and a plaster cast of an Allosaurus footprint that guests may step into. Visitors are invited to decorate Munro’s coloring pages at a table in the gallery.
The Brachiosaurus may have been the largest animal ever to walk on earth. It was as tall as a four-story building and weighed as much as ten elephants! The Brachiosaurus was a herbivore, meaning it ate only plants. It probably traveled in herds and could live up to 100 years old.
The Stegosaurus had bony plates that ran in two rows from its head its tail. It is believed these helped regulate body heat. It also had four spikes at the end of its tail that it used to defend against enemies. Despite its large size (30-feet long), the Stegosaurus’s brain was as small as two walnuts!
A fierce meat-eating predator, the Spinosaurus gets its name from the spines on its back, which measured up to six-feet high. It lived by the sea in what is now Africa. The Spinosaurus was almost 60-feet long, making it the largest of all carnivorous dinosaurs, even bigger than the Tyrannosaurus rex and the Giganotosaurus.
Tyrannosaurus rex
With 60 sharp teeth and a powerful jaw, the Tyrannosaurus rex could eat 500 pounds of meat in a single bite! It was 40-feet long and its strong legs and powerful tail helped it move quickly. Its arms were small, but had two sharp hook-like claws. The Tyrannosaurus rex lived in the forests of what is now North America, 65 to 85 million years ago.
