Join Beth Krommes in a special celebration of her illustrated book Where the Deer Slip Through by Katey Howes. The story moves through the course of a beautiful summer day, from sunrise to moonrise, as a host of animals find their way through a gap in the hedge, bringing the farm to life. Beth calls this book her “love letter to Pennsylvania”, her home state and Katey’s. A starred review in Kirkus said “The rich language and striking images encourage multiple readings, while the soothing, cumulative cadence creates a lovely bedtime experience.” After reading her book for those in attendance, Beth will describe her steps in illustrating a manuscript and will demonstrate her scratchboard technique.

Beth Krommes

Beth Krommes is a children’s book illustrator, pattern designer, painter, printmaker, rug hooker, and weaver from Peterborough, NH. Her scratchboard illustrations for The House in the Night by Susan Marie Swanson won the 2009 Caldecott Award. Other awards for her book work include a Silver Medal from the Society of Illustrators Original Art Exhibit in 2016, and the 2001 Golden Kite Award for Excellence in Picture Illustration from The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. Beth’s books have been included in the Bologna Children’s Book Fair Illustrator’s Exhibition several times. She has a BFA in painting from Syracuse University and an MAT in art education from UMASS Amherst. Recently Beth earned an AAS degree in Textile/Surface Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC and now spends most of her time designing and hooking rugs and weaving.
